Taste the Season 2014 [Niagara on the Lake]

This time for Taste the Season (@NiagaraWine) we only got time a day trip instead of staying overnight like here, here and here. We took it slow this time but still manage to make 11 stop out of the 26 wineries participating. I know a lot of people try to avoid the wine country during the colder months but I highly recommend it since it's just as beautiful.

2012 Triomphe Cab Franc
Paired w/ Duck Confit, pear & Brie Phyllo Tart

2013 Trius Cabernet Franc
Paired w/ Spiced Quinoa with Chorizo Sausage and Vine Tomato Sauce

2012 Oak Aged Chardonnay
Paired w/ Chef Collin Goodine's Savoury Sage & Squash Soup
They always do the best pairing and this was another hit, love the presentation, the color and nothing beats a hot bowl of soup on a cold day. The earthy sweet flavor of the squash paired surprisingly well with the oak-y flavor of the Chardonnay.

2008 Caroline Gamay Rose
Paired w/ Nutella Opera Slice

2011 Kabang Red
Paired w/ Treadwell "Farm to Table" Tortiere

2012 Niagara Estate Grand Reserve Riesling
Paired w/ Cold Water Shrimp Jambalaya with House Cured Taso Ham
Another year and another disappointment, not only was it not that great looking but also kept heated for way too long which turn it into mush and yeah I didn't get any shrimp.

2007 Riesling (Dry) Library Release
Paired w/ Seasonal Trio: Harvest Vegetable Terrine, Fig, Pear & Orange Compote on Cured Meat, Aged Ontario Cheddar
It was cute at first but Strewn kept doing these trio and this time the flavors didn't really transition well one after the other.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon
Paired w/ Slow Cooked Black Angus Alberta Beef topped with PEI Lobster

2012 Private Reserve Cabernet Franc
Paired w/ Caramelized Onion Pulled Pork with Roasted Red Pepper and Feta Compote on a Peppercorn and Shallot Focaccia

2013 Cabernet Merlot
Paired w/ Rustic pork terrine with Maple Smoked Bacon and Cranberry compote

2012 Vidal Icewine
Paired w/ Caramelized Onion Tart with Ontario Goat Cheese and Thyme
Love the ice wine with the goat cheese, so good. I am not a fan of sweeter wine, so even less so of ice wine but trust me, you have to at least taste it once in their special ice wine glass.

Verdict :
Another fun year, always great to taste the new offerings of local wineries and always interesting to see what they pair it with.
Days of Wine & Chocolate is coming up in February, a total sweetness overdose
